About

Profile & History

With the liberalization of the broadcasting industry through the new democracy in South Africa, the communities of the former KwaNdebele, including the areas of Moutse and Moretele2 as well as the Highveld region of Mpumalanga Province, decided to form a voluntary Association as a vehicle of lodging a license for broadcasting purposes on the 15 October 1994.

The temporary license was approved by the IBA on the 25 April 1995.  Kangala Community Radio, commenced with first broadcast on the 16 October 1995 for its first year of broadcasting.  The application for the second temporary community broadcasting license was submitted on the 15 July 1996 and was also approved by the IBA for the period 16 October 1996 to 15 October 1997. In 1997 the Community Radio lodged its application for its four year broadcasting license which was granted for the period January 2001to January 2004

During the past eleven (11) years of broadcasting Kangala Community Radio has managed to buy its own studio equipment and have also received a donation of a 500-watt transmitter from Plessey South Africa. The Department of Communications also provided two fully equipped  studios one for production and one for on air valued at R350 000 Kangala Community Radio currently uses its own equipment to broadcast.

Kangala Radio serves the community of the Highveld (Western region) of Mpumalanga effectively. Communities without telephones in the houses, use the Radio to pass on messages to their own friends and relatives.  The Mpumalanga Government also supplies the Radio with weekly bulletins of government activities.

This second four year application by Kangala Radio is an indication of the need for the station in its broadcast area.  Kangala Radio is used as an empowering tool to infuse self-confidence in the youth of our disadvantaged communities. As a result of this exercise bigger stations of the SABC like the Ndebele medium station Kwekwezi, have already recruited 10 of our presenters for themselves. Kangala Community Radio is used as a good training ground for self discipline by the youth residing in the broadcast area of the station.
